Kang's Money Plants

Each time we visit the Kang's beautiful lavender fields, I am overwhelmed by the big view. I am not a landscape painter. Can't see the forest for the trees. I always find myself drawn to the circular flower bed with the birch tree surrounded by money plants and irises. This year the money plant's seed pods had turned the most gorgeous range of colors on the day of our visit.

Sketching Weekend

It's kinda cool when I look at my sketchbooks and think of all of you.....who I was sitting with, the wonderful sharing and connection. I miss you all! It was GREAT weekend visiting Whidbey Island!

I guess if there's an umbrella anywhere near it's going to get into my sketch. The Kang's gardens and lavender fields are a joy to visit.

Kangs' Lavender Farm

We love to go to the Kangs' lavender fields, but somehow I never draw the lavender. The fields of lavender are overwhelmingly beautiful and seem impossible to capture. This year I found a lovely vignette with a birch tree riddled with woodpecker holes, in the center of a bed of frothy pink flowers with the lavender fields and tree line in the background.  It's one of those sketches that I hated when I finished it because it was so overworked and busy and I despaired that I still don't know how to simplify.  But I like it better today. I feel this vignette tells the story of Kay Kang's artistic vision and beautiful soul. It's full of life, light, color, movement and whimsy. It's growing on me.

Bentwood and Lavender

Visiting the Kang Lavender farm last week was reminiscent of the kind of summer I had as a youngster.  Sitting, enjoying beautiful weather with friends and letting the talk flow around you.  The fields of Lavender are so colorful, it was warm and quiet and a light breeze kept us cool.

My friend Sooja arranged this sketching location and acted as hostess, making a Lavender drink and cookies to keep us happy.  We were entranced with this beautiful setting, the barn, and the garden.  I fell in love with, as usual the most complicated thing in sight, which was the Bentwood Rocker.  All because it was painted RED.  Don't you think all bentwood rockers should be painted?

Kang's Lavender Farm

There was a slight breeze and dappled light under a tree at the pristine lavender and grape farm. That was enough to put me in a playful mood on that hot afternoon. I started playing with the fun shapes of shadow falling on my paper. The dog, Aggie, was also in a playful mood as she ran off with Mary's painting towel.

So it seems I repeat myself when I post after sketching. It was, yet again, another absolutely amazing and perfect afternoon. Who knew there was such a beautiful lavender farm just a short distance from Millman Rd? We were hosted with ice water, cookies, cold watermelon, and bundles of lavender. It brought back strong memories of my mother's last days. She loved lavender and there is a lavender farm near their home. I bought armloads of lavender and spread it all over the floor in her room. When we walked we released lavender fragrance. Thank you to the Kang's for a peaceful, sweet afternoon.
