Visited The Frye Museum in Seattle last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the Gabriel von Max exhibit. I could only sketch in the exhibit using a museum-supplied golf pencil - dull of course. At first I was cranky about that, but after doing a couple of pencil sketches, I decided I should pull out my #2B more often!

Parallel Play Time at China City
Sometimes when we are sketching together it feels like happy children having parallel play time. We are each working happily alone on our own sketches, but at the same time happy to be sketching together. This week at China City, it felt like we were sketching parallel universes.

Poodle
While listening to a lecture I drew this porcelain sewing kit poodle. It is one of many porcelain poodles in the collection of Mary, co-founder of "Life's a Poodle" -- an organization that raises awareness of the issues of children with learning differences.
Drawing around other people who are not sketching still makes me uncomfortable. But with other people focused on their own note taking, it was easier. Also easier because the porcelain poodle holds still, unlike people.

Island Coffeehouse and Books
I used my waterbrush to add color to the pencil sketch I did in the Island Coffeehouse garden a couple weeks ago. I find I can now control the water and color more easily.

More from the Edgecliff - Barbara's Sketches
Another newcomer to the group, Barbara Mearing, did these 3 sketches at the Edgecliff. Barbara is showing at Island Angel Chocolates in Langley through the end of Feburuary and doing very well. See more of Barbara's work on her blog.

A novice sketches a master
I haven't sketched since - oh - 1978 (ouch) but am loving the encouragement, fun, and release of creativity provided by my new island sketching mates. I post the following to show that even a beginner can try her hand at this.
The beginner's Virginia; lots to learn.
I look forward to learning how to add color, perspective, etc. etc. etc. in the months to come. I've got some talented friends to learn from. Thanks to my new island sketching buddies. Next stop, watercolors... and when I really get brave - all those cool crazy pens Kris uses!!

Faces
Exploring faces in a crowd with watercolor.
This was drawn with a pencil. I found myself pushing the graphite around with my fingers.
Meditating over coffee. Started this with watercolor and finished it with ink.
