The guy on the left looks a little fakey because I had to make up his face in order to finish the sketch.  He seemed a little cranky about being sketched.

Lovely Afternoon in Coupeville

It was nice to tackle something simple for a change. This charming scarecrow was standing against the window at Tea & Treasures in Coupeville. It was a very congenial sketching venue, complete with complimentary shortbread from the owner and a view of the very charming Coupeville High School homecoming parade on Front Street.

Next stop, Toby's, for a bite to eat and a glass of wine. These gentlemen sat at a nearby booth.

Big Buffalo

After a civilized afternoon of drinking English tea, listening to classical music and sketching a zen garden it was time to move across the street to sketch something much bolder and wilder.

As usual, got more sketching done at Apres-Sketching this week than I did during scheduled sketching. I spent the evening looking up.

Sherryl fixed my black brush pen, which has not been working right since I put in a new cartridge in weeks ago. She's so handy. So I finally got my "black" on again which allows me to overwork my sketches to the max.

Wednesday Evening at Toby's

Work prevented me from getting to our regular afternoon sketching meet-up, but I managed to hook up with three from the group for some post-sketching sketching at Toby's over wine and calamari.

I think I've found my niche. I like to draw old-fashioned bathrooms. This one at the end of the hall on the second floor of Compass Rose B&B is especially lovely.

After an afternoon of hard sketching at the Compass Rose, we stopped at Toby's to unwind and eat garlicky bivalves. I got a decent likeness of Natalie despite all the faces she was making to try to foil me.

I arrived at Local Grown and was delighted to meet two sketchers that came from Anacortes, Missy and Aleli. I was hoping they'd join us. They're great fun and I hope we can rendezvous often for sketching adventures. Got in a sketch of William, the owner of Local Grown, pulling coffee. Then ventured out to the lobby to draw Rosie the whale. Bones are great fun to draw. So organic. We then went to Toby's for wine and fish and chips. Got in a few more sketches...

Bones and Brew in Coupeville

The historic Coupeville Wharf includes several wonderful breezeway displays as well as fascinating skeletons of Rosie the whale and a few other marine mammals hanging from the ceiling.  Here's a sketch of the bones of a sea lion - along with a sketch of one of our visiting Anacortes sketchers below.  It's kind of our own crazy little natural history museum right here in Coupeville!

After sketching at the wharf, a few of us popped into Toby's to toast our visiting sketchers and introduce them to Penn Cove mussels right out of the cove.

We're looking forward to a field trip to sketch with them on Fidalgo and sure hope they come back to Whidbey often.

We showed up at Whidbey Pies Cafe at 5pm sharp Monday, August 30th, to hang Kris' show, only to discover we were a day early. Artists are not known for their command of the calendar. So we had a good laugh and a short review of how many days in the month of August. We had the evening free to sketch and ended up at Toby's.

I was really happy with the way this sketch was going. Ponytail guy was sitting at the bar looking to his left, toward the door, long enough for me to get this much. He never looked that way again . . . and it's probably a good thing. I like it the way it is and would have overworked it if I'd had the chance.

And here's the reason he never looked to his left again. His girl arrived and sat to his right! Sweet.

Sue and I stopped in at Christopher's in Coupveille for a glass of wine then headed to Toby's down the street for Mussels. We sketched of course.
