It rained buckets outside, and inside the greenhouse it was still finger-numbing cold.........but there were many charming vignettes for painting at Bayview Farm and Garden.

Bayview & Freeland on a Blustery Day
Here's the result of an hour or so sketching inside Bayview Farm and Garden. Enjoyed the promise of Spring though wondering if it will ever come.
Stopped at China City in Freeland on my way home just long enough to cross paths with my hubby who was arriving to attend a retirement party. I sipped a glass of wine and sketched until he arrived.

Working "outside the box" at Bayview Nursery
Still continuing to "find my way" in this new art form. Among the plants at Bayview Nursery I decided to try two different methods of creating a sketch. This first one, of all the watering cans, was done by laying down areas of wash, then using a waterproof Lumocolor pen to draw directly over them. Very little pencil structure underneath - a VERY big step for me. This method certainly saves time. Fast sketch.
This one was done with washes first, as well, but then finished by direct drawing over the top with the Lamy pen, again with very little pencil. Instead I used a lot of contour style drawing which is something a rarely do. Both of these were a long stretch for me. I am not sure how successful they were, but as learning experiences go, they were they were OK.

Plants and Animals at Bayview Nursery
Sketched outside in the wind and the sun until I decided I had suffered enough for my art. It was cold. But having to stop prematurely probably saved my sketch.
I had a little more time to devote to overworking this one! I am so drawn to patterns and collections, but I really struggle with conveying depth.

Bayview Farm and Garden
The nursery was bursting with color but I wanted to try my new white pen and toned paper...
even without color, I like the result!

Color at Bayview on a gray wet day in May
Wendy's First Post
Garden Colors on a Gray Day
Late May cold, gray day. No better place to sketch than Bayview Farm and Garden - color everywhere!

Laburnum Arbor - Bayview Farm & Garden
The laburnum (aka golden chain tree) arbor at Bayview Farm & Garden is in full glory right now. It's a magnificent sight.
I sketched it on a rainy day. Check it out on a sunny day.

Bayview Farm and Garden Inspiration
While Kris went directly to the Buddha, I found inspiration in the flow of this garden sculpture. Having only a short time for sketching, I laid out the shapes in pencil first and filled in the color after I got home.

A lovely, peaceful day for our sketch group to be drawing outside at Bayview Farm and Garden. Got in this lovely Buddha.

Two Days Sketch Montage
What a beautiful setting Bayview Nursery is. So many lovely flowers to inspire hope for spring to make a speedy arrival. I began a sketch and Lisbeth sat down within my frame so I included her. My large vertical format watercolor pad turned out to be a bit too much for the time I had. I ended up with a few lines delineating a bit of her and some plants in the foreground leaving lots of space remaining, so today I filled the rest of the paper with more sketches. New Daffodils popping up in the yard, nettles, a bush, a small table with Kleenex, cup of tea, and various odds and ends. Just scribbles for fun. Besides Lisbeth, I'm in it too, sketching.

Flowers, Felines & Fungus
Flowers from floor to ceiling at Bayview Nursery.
Lottie, the Bayview Nursery cat curled up with her toy at the checkout counter. Can you spot something unusual about her anatomy?
This guy was getting a consultation about a powdery mildew problem on his prize rhody. Very sad tale.

Spring Fever at Bayview Farm and Garden
Just what this sketcher needed - a couple of hours surrounded by beautiful, colorful plants. Thanks to the staff of Bayview Farm and Garden who welcomed us, encouraged us, and let us soak up the lovely surroundings.
Color everywhere! It was even nice to peek just outside the front door. Couldn't resist picking up a few primroses to brighten up my winter garden. But the orchid display was my favorite! I just had to take one home to my office.
Now, where's my trowel?
