Watercolor Class

Kris Wiltse will be offering a watercolor class in February. Here is a description and the particulars...

Watercolor Basics

Watercolor! There's nothing like watching it explode and intermingle on paper. It's a direct, spontaneous, jewel-like medium with a mind of it's own. With taming any wild paint it boils down to working with and understanding it's assets. And watercolor has many. In this class I'll cover through talks, demos and assignments: tools and materials, loading the brush, brush techniques/mark making, pigment characteristics, color theory and wash techniques such as wet on dry, wet in wet, glazing and mixing color on paper (merging) vs. palette mixing. Come learn the basics of this exciting medium and explore it in a comfortable, supportive and private setting on Whidbey Island.

Class days and times:
Tuesdays, 10am-12ish, February 4, 11, 18 and 25
Cost: $75
Place: Private studio

Email me to secure your spot: kwiltse@whidbey.com

It'll be fun!

Drawing on Location: Dalvero Academy Workshop in Seattle

Lisbeth, Faye and I all worked with Veronica Lawlor last summer at the International Urban Sketchers Symposium in Portland.  We are huge fans of her reportage sketching and highly recommend this workshop. In fact Faye has already signed up!

Dalvero Academy/ Urban Sketchers Workshop in Seattle
Urban Sketcher correspondents Veronica (Ronnie) Lawlor and Margaret Hurst, co-founders of Dalvero Academy, will be teaching a three-day workshop specifically geared to urban sketching enthusiasts on June 24, 25, and 26, 2011 in Seattle.

The focus of the workshop will be drawing on location. Topics covered in the three days will include: dimension in your drawing, the importance of the thumbnail, picture design and direction, variation of calligraphy and marks in your drawing for greater expression, color, incorporating people in a scene, portraits, narrative content and the different materials of the location artist.

We will review various artists and/or art movements for inspiration in our daily lectures. You will draw people every day! By successful completion of this workshop, participants will walk away with more confidence and have a greater sense of comfort and idea of what to capture on location. All competency levels welcome.

Tuition: $350.00. A non-refundable deposit of $50.00 is due by May 31, 2011.(A 10% donation from the proceeds of this workshop will go to the Urban Sketchers non-profit fund, for the promotion of location drawing worldwide.)

Please email Veronica or Margaret for more info.

Getting Lippy

Kris finally had had enough of my drawings of her with clown lips. So yesterday she gave me a short lesson in drawing mouths. And voila! 15 minutes later I completed my first creditable drawing of Kris. This is the first drawing of Kris that I'm not embarrassed to post. What a good teacher! I should write a testimonial for her website. I could even provide a ton of scary "before lip lesson" images. Exhibits A and B

So, hopefully, my mouth-fearing days  are over. Onward to the next challenge! (Drawing a face with just watercolor only - no inkline)
