Mexican Morning

Another lazy morning in Mexico. Painting Mexican scenes on paper I got in Bali. I'm a very spoiled child.

BOO!

Had a very nice sketching day with the sketchers at Sharen Heath's yard. Then more fun at Sherryl's for happy hour. Working in this new Stillman and Birn Zeta sketchbook. The jury's out on it. The hot press surface is great for pen but watercolor is very difficult. Colors get sucked in before they can flow across the surface. I say Boo! Hoo! But I'm considering it trash now so maybe some good sketches will come along.

Using the synthetic paper, Yupo, keeps the colors intense and playful.

Crows & Spooky town

Hello all,
I'm rushing this onto the web tonight because the next week is crazy.  We had a wonderful day sketching in Langley and then Happy Hour or more at Sherryl's comfy home.  Sharen Heath has done it again, with the most fun and creative front yard in Langley.  Langley has a kind of crow thing going on and we attribute it to Sharen's wonderful Tim Leonard crows.  Enjoy!

Port Townsend - Sue's Birthday

We all met in Port Townsend to sketch and celebrate Sue's birthday.  There was so much to sketch and so much to celebrate - it was great fun.

Pt. Townsend (Sue's Birthday)

Chatting on the corner
My contribution of the Pt Townsend sketches.  How did you all get so many done?  These two were sketched on Friday afternoon.  I was taken by the ghostly image of the large ship being repaired on Indian Island and then found a sunny spot near Sherryl where my view of this wonderful building and two women chatting got my attention.  If you are saying where is the third story?, well I had a small piece of paper and left it off!
For future reference airbnb are a terrific way to stay.  My little abode was well furnished, cozy and inexpensive.  I did miss the ghost and friend action at the hotel 8-(. Pat

Permission to Play

This afternoon I decided to make a card to thank my sister for the lovely bouquet she sent for my birthday. It was so much fun, I tried it a second and third time. Then I decided it was okay to use up all my blank watercolor cards and just play with all the fall colors in the yard before it's too late. I bundled up, poured a glass of wine and went out on the deck and painted 5 more cards with all the luscious pigments of autumn. It was exhilarating. I ran out of daylight before I ran out of blank cards. These were all done with color first, then ink. I think I'll start sending a card a day to my mom.

Partying in Port Townsend with the Sketchers

Some sketches from my fabulous birthday trip to Port Townsend with the Whidbey Island Sketchers. Thanks so much to all of you who came along and made it a birthday to remember! Such a fun trip!

Sketches from the Palace Hotel in Port Townsend

I started this sketch in the coffee shop at the Keystone (all right, Coupeville) ferry dock.
Had a little trouble here capturing heavy fog using only ink and line. Not too clear what was going on. Maybe some shading with a pencil would have helped. Or an ink wash. Or not . . .
The wall sconces in the hotel lobby were hobnail cranberry glass and cast the most interesting shadows on the pale pink walls.
The front entrance and window of the Palace Hotel on Water Street in Port Townsend.
The lamp in the corner of our second floor "living room", and the amaryllis on the old console table.
The clawfoot tub in the "continental" bathroom I shared with Emily. I really wanted to fill it and soak for about an hour, but, sadly, there was no time. Too much other fun stuff to do.

Port Townsend Birthday Sketch Trip

Sue's birthday was a fun excuse for a gaggle of Whidbey Island Sketchers & Anacortes & Seattle sketcher friends to take the ferry to Port Townsend for a sunny afternoon and beautiful evening of sketching.

New Langley friends hosted us on their boat docked at Pt. Hudson for sunset happy hour.  Tabor - the fabulous boat dog - charmed us all.

An artist is always drawn to the light  and color. What fun it was to experiment with Yupo.
Thanks to Cynthia.

South Whidbey Historical Museum

In honor if Langley's Centennial Year we spent a warm cozy afternoon, on a cold day,  sketching in the Historical Museum on 2nd Ave. Artifacts from Langley's history, some that ....some of us remember using...fill the building. Much to choose from! Volunteer Sue Holter graciously offered to let us in, thanks Sue. The museum is generally open on weekends during fall and winter. Definitely worth a visit!
