The World on Your Shoulders

At last month's C.R.A.P. (Creative Recycled Art Projects) show at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, I sketched Janet Pheifer's wonderful "The World on Your Shoulders". This piece is made from a mannequin, an old globe, wine foils, buttons and chains. It is a magnificent thing to behold and always steals the show. (I see I dated it 3/9/2017, but it was really 3/9/2018.)

Sketching Costumes

This was my 2nd year getting to go sketch at WICA's costume loft. Oh my! What temptations to draw on every side! I found this hat and just had to sketch it. It was covered with silk roses of all shades and had a peacock feather artistically draping over the brim. What fun! Thanks so much Judith for setting this up!

Huge thanks and gratitude to Costume Mistress Judith V. for allowing the Whidbey Island Sketchers up into the costume storage loft at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts (WICA). So many beautiful costumes, hats, headdresses, capes, fans and SHOES!!! Very hard to choose and focus on just one neat thing to draw!

WICA Costume Loft

This is going to date me, but today I sketched these black and white wing tips at the WICA Costume Loft, the whole time with Joe Jackson, "Gotta Look Sharp!" in my head.

Oh what fun it is to sketch with the Whidbey Island Sketchers!!!!

Peter and the Starcatcher

A front row seat at WICA's fun production of "Peter and the Starcatcher" (the prequel to Peter Pan) gave me all the leg room I could ask for AND a prime position for sketching the fabulous costumes. Tiger Lily's costume and attitude were fierce, but she didn't stay still long enough to get much of a sketch. Alas, tonight is the final night.

 

They're Creepy and They're Kooky

The Addams Family - A Musical at WICA was about the most fun you can have in a theater.
Sketching at live performances is becoming one of my favorite kinds of sketching. I don't try to apply color on site anymore. I just do lots and lots of ink drawings on cheap paper and add color at home to my favorites.

Our WISK fearless leader, Sue Van Etten, and I just LOVE sketching musicians.  You've gotta be quick!!!  They don't wait for a sketch.  They move, dance, jive and the sketcher's just gotta keep up or move onto the next sketch.  Anyway, what an energetic beautiful inspiring group this was at WICA's Zech Hall.  The Rubatano Marimba Center put on a beautiful performance before some head out to Zimbabwe!!!!  Happy and safe travels to you & thanks for the great time!

Day late and a dollar short!  That's me these days.  Here are three sketches that I haven't posted yet.
Thank you to WICA and the costume loft for lots of inspiration and Unitarian Universalist Church for hosting us and providing a show for our sketches.  I love the huge wall hangings at UUCWI and you can see I added a couple of the real windows of the view.  The hangings win!

Kathy in Costume

My only creditable sketch from the WICA costume loft turned out to be a portrait of Kathy. Unfortunately the sketch did not showcase the entire purple genie costume she was sporting. It was SO Kathy. I'm so sick of making muddy overworked messes that I was determined to use a light touch and leave part of the sketch uncolored. But when Kathy asked to use it for her FB profile pic, I thought maybe I should finish coloring it. Anyway, here are both versions. Take your pick, Kathy.

Thanks once again to Judith Van Arnam and Whidbey Island Center for the Arts for giving us access to the costume loft. It was a wonderland of fun and fancy and fabric.  I hope we can go back again next month.

COSTUMES!!!!!

I had a FABULOUS time with the Sketchers in the costume shop loft of the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, at the invitation of Costumer Extraordinaire and fellow sketcher, Judith. We decked ourselves out in shawls, hats and ridiculous shoes and sketched great stuff. I found a rack with, among other things, a Beefeater and an Elizabethan Dandy costume. But, GASP, no kilts! No KILTS!!?? WICA, ye'd best get up a new production of "Brigadoon" verra verra soon.
