Plein Air Demo

Pacific Northwest Art School hosted a plein air demonstration by Mitchell Albala this afternoon on the back deck of the Captain Whidbey Inn.  While Mitchell demonstrated, I sketched him along with a few of the workshop participants.

Cig Gal

Ok.  So this has nothing to do with Whidbey Island.  To add insult to injury, it's sketched from a photo.  You know what?  I don't care; I just love sketching people from photos... trying to capture their expressions.  It's the most sketching fun I have.

Ok, now back to sketching in places, plein air with the gang at our next sketch meet-up.  In the meantime, thanks for indulging me.

Red Ink

Duncan's got a brand new red bed. And I've got some brand new ink samples from Noodler's. So many colors to try out, so few fountain pens.

June Flowers... Finally

All this ridiculous June rain has at least meant that my garden is in full bloom - finally!

Enjoyed learning from fellow sketchers and putting down color first, followed by very loose and very few ink lines.

I'm so excited to actually be warm, walk on the beach, eat outside.  Had fun today painting on the beach.  Here are a couple of small paintings I did.

The entry way of the barn

Thanks to the Kanes for sharing their estate with us.
A very special location to sketch. The history is most fascinating.

Sketching at the Kane's

This was a fun day, with too much subject matter to choose from.  The goodies were appreciated by all and the coziness of both the guest house and the barn made our day very companionable.  Thank you.

Beautiful repeated color in this garden.

Home, Hearth, Art and Whimsey

The grounds, the views, the gardens, the model railroad, the glass garden, the dinosaur garden and much, much more were tempting beyond reason. However, the misty, moisty day helped me to choose to find warmth, hearth, art and whimsey in the structure called The Barn. I settled in with my cup of coffee and found plenty to tickle my heart, my pen and my brush. I can't seem to resist well loved, artfully arranged interior scenes. Thanks so much to the Kane's for their most appreciated hospitality. Titles for these pieces in order: Cozy Chair by the Fire, Barn Kitchen, Table by the Window.

Hearth, Home, Art and Whimsey

The sketchers were like kids in a candy store exploring all the art and fabulous sketching opportunities at JoAnn and Artie Kane's "Point of View" estate home.  I loved the warm colors and patterns in this still life of candles against the stone hearth in The Barn.

Enchanting Glass Garden

I found an old box of crayolas in the kids' art supply box and they seemed like fun tools to use for this enchanting glass garden (which I'm sure is inhabited by faeries). With its dinosaur topiary garden, train village, gazebo, and multiple points of view overlooking the water, the Kane's garden is a delightful place to spend an afternoon drawing.

Keystone Cafe The Kennewick, and Port Townsend

Sketched this while waiting for my Dear Sweet Hubby to rescue me with jumper cables.
( next time I'll remember to close the hatch lid if I pop it open and go away for the day.)

Checking out the rescue equipment from the stern.

There was lots of activity at the N. W. Maritime Center.
Thank goodness for the gracious cafe and it's windows.

Port Townsend

The Dog-a-Foot diner in Port Townsend is dwarfed by the old ads on the brick building next door. Michael Townsend was kind enough to pose for a quick sketch.

Port Townsend Steampunk

You just never know what you're going to find on a Whidbey Island Sketchers field trip. Yesterday we stumbled upon Victorian-costumed characters about town setting the mood for Port Townsend's Steampunk Fest this weekend. Fun!

Coupeville Breakfast Club

I've seen this group of gentlemen at more than one Coupeville breakfast spot. They gather at 10:00 for coffee, breakfast and politics.  Seven of them showed up today. Do they meet everyday? Or just Tuesdays? I 'm not sure. But I love seeing them out together having a good time with their pals.

Coupeville Tuesday

You can watch the lovely baker working the dough from a table or through the front window of the Knead and Feed Restaurant in Coupeville where the breakfast pastries are sinfully delicious.
The gray day did not deter this fellow with his metal detector on the beach below.
